This is the second painting from Iris Compiet's Faery Workout.
Iris provides sketches of her creatures for the Faery Workout. These can be printed out or (this is how I did it) you make your own sketch.
In a 20 to 30 minute video, Iris colors the sketch with watercolor and gives tips on her approach and working with this medium in general.

I tried to paint this witch much more loosely than I normally do. That is definitely something Iris motivates me to do with her work. She also encourages us to come up with our own story for these creatures. In this painting, I imagined the witch, wrapped in a thick green wool jacket, in an old wooden hut with a warming fire in the fireplace.
At the end however I was missing some contrast between the creature and the background. That's why I added details with a white acrylic marker (Poscapen). This is always a good way to get that certain something out of a painting. The acrylic markers hold on almost any surface and so can be used as a finish on virtually any image.
By the way, Iris has a book out about her creatures - Faeries of the faultlines.
This one is on my wish list and I'm looking forward to getting to know the fairies and other creatures better.
