Favorites: art supplies

Here are some of my favorite art supplies:

Fineliner, waterproof

SAKURA PIGMA® MICRON Fineliner

I find these fineliners unbeatable. They are waterproof, do not smudge and are comfortable to hold.

I mostly use them to refine watercolor pictures and to give them a little more definition in certain places. For this I often use the finest pencil with a tip of 0.2mm.

It is also possible to first create a linework and then color it with (watercolor) paint.

Tip: The pens are also available in a set of three (0.3 mm, 0.4 mm and 0.5 mm) or six (0.2 mm, 0.25 mm, 0.3 mm, 0.35 mm, 0.45 mm and 0.5 mm) pens.

Hahnemühle Bamboo-Mixed Media art board for watercolor and guache paintings

made of 90 % bamboo fiber and 10 % rags, 265 gsm.

As the name art board already suggests, this paper is very strong and relatively stable. This is particularly practical with the available spiral pads and sheets - both of them have no glued sides - because its strength it can withstand a relatively large amount of water and does not buckle too much.

The paper has a nice structure, which allows nice watercolor effects.

As you can see in this example; despite the structure drawing with fineliners causes no problems. Even the finest SAKURA PIGMA® MICRON fineliner (see above) has survived drawing on this paper undamaged.

PENTEL® Aquash Brush water brush

I like this water tank brush because you can control the water flow very well. Thanks to the pointed bristles painting details is no problem.

The plastic bristles absorb some color over time. However, this color is no longer released. You can clean the brush well by wiping it over a handkerchief or cloth several times.

These brushes come in different sizes and are available in many places.

To moisten the colors in my watercolor palette before painting, I use a small spray bottle.

This one is from Sostrene Grene.

Of course other spray bottles are also suitable but I find this one ideal because of its narrow water container.

Some artists also use pipettes to moisten the color in the pans.

Posca Pen

The color is opaque, matt, intense, lightfast, odorless and suitable for many (almost all) surfaces. The colors can be applied on top of each other, mixed and are suitable for watercolor techniques. As soon as the color is dry, however, it is waterproof.

I use the markers mainly for highlights but I plan to get a black marker with a fine tip to add high-impact outlines to my paintings.

Do you have a favorite that I have not mentioned here? Let me know, because I always like to try out new and unknown materials.
